Physician Specialty Society Recommendations

The Office of Medical Policy & Technology Assessment develops medical policy for WellPoint, Inc., and its health plans. The principal component of our policy development process is to review new medical technologies and procedures as well as new uses of existing technologies and procedures to determine if they meet our definition of medical necessity, or whether they are investigational. Technologies and procedures may include areas such as devices, behavioral health services, biologics and specialty pharmaceuticals.

Our medical policies are intended to reflect current scientific data and clinical thinking. Our goal is to provide timely review of new recommendations from various physician specialty societies. Recommendations that we receive are posted along with our response to those recommendations.
